Ok it's getting ridiculous... Kleenex made a disposable hand towel.
I pointed this out the other day and I was given the nasty sneer like I had just eaten my toe jam... I'm not nasty, I like to use my brain.
Look at the commercial.
Really, am I going to use a hand towel that is on the other side of the screen... it's moldy, practically with roaches crawling out of it? No! That's nasty!!!
But I am not a germaphobe either.
Now some of you read my note on Facebook about the Lysol soap dispenser (I pointed out that no one touches a soap dispenser unless their hands are dirty so you're not really protecting anything) and I now receive coupons in the mail on a regular basis, telling me to get one so I can stop being so nasty dirty.
My mom pointed out that she probably would use the hand towel and then be so concerned about wasting etc that she would hang it up for another use. And then we agreed that we change our hand towels on a regular basis (especially with 3 kids who wipe their mouths on it etc)
So how can we be environmentally protecting as well as OCD about germs?
From another perspective, maybe you look at the fact my family is always sick and think that's a good reason to NOT listen to me... keep in mind that 90% of our sicknesses are asthma related... Ella has the best immune system I've ever seen ... her and Johnny and I think it came about by exposure.
I'll admit... I'm not obsessive about Hand sanitizer. That's not to say that I don't like it or I don't keep some in my purse, but I LOVE washing hands. I will always pick washing hands over sanitizing. I don't like the thought of superbugs. I like the thought that my kids are getting a few germs to build up their immune systems since I grew up with a pretty cruddy one (NOT my mom's fault). We still use sanitizer in those ridiculous public bathrooms that have sinks and no soap (so dumb) (and no I dont like public bathrooms, but I'll be darned if my kids are crazy for them), we use it when we go to a park, or goodwill.
On the other hand (washed I hope) I cleaned my kitchen the other day and I counted that in my crazy state I washed my hands 8 times while I cleaned... while unloading dishes, loading them, cleaning the table, picking up junk, counters, etc etc...
BUT I did NOT go through an entire box of Kleenex handtowels either... I used the same handtowel and then put it in the laundry afterward...
So, NO i'm not nasty, I just feel like protecting the environment, thinking about the future, being practical, economical, and reasonable... and I won't pass judgement on you for doing the opposite. i understand the societal concern. :)
I agree that it does seem wasteful in the home. But I have a girlfriend with an in-home day care and she uses papertowels in the bathrooms to reduce the spread of germs. I think that makes sense when you don't live with each other. But for guests in our home... they use a cloth towel...
